Dear Parents,

-
Your child has been given the opportunity to participate in iGEM.  iGEM stands for the international genetically engineered machine.  This competition allows high school students to participate in synthetic biology.  During the competition your child will design a biological machine.  This machine will have a purpose that the team engineers.  Students will use genetic material to construct the circuit for the machine.  They will then insert the circuit into their cell and test the effectiveness of their machine.  iGEM provides teams a virtual documentation center known as a wiki.  This wiki will be managed by iGEM and be open to the public.  Any information that is posted on the wiki will be viewed by other teams, judges, and any individual interested in iGEM.

The competition finishes at the jamboree. The jamboree is where the team’s wiki, poster, and 20 minute presentation will be judged by leading members of the scientific community. The judges will judge each project by reviewing the engineering process, laboratory procedures, purpose of their machine and information on the team members.  This means that your child’s name and pictures can be posted on the team wiki, poster, and presentation. The judges award prizes to the team they view as exceptional in the given areas. Because of the nature of iGEM and the information that can be posted on the wiki, your permission will be required for your child to participate.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact the team leader or Rebecca Schini, Rebecca@igem.org.
