1. General safety
- Researcher

Before we conducted the experiment, we were well informed about the issues regarding the safety rule of the laboratory. We made sure that every time we were doing the lab we wore lab coats and disposable gloves. Also, while we were conducting the experiment, we used appropriate methods to dispose waste materials. But since we were still highschool students, instructor also gave us the guidance in the laboratory, and made sure that we were conducting the laboratory in a proper way.

- Environmental

Cartagena protocol (http://bch.cbd.int/protocol/text/) “In accordance with the precautionary approach contained in Principle 15 of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, the objective of the Protocol is to contribute to ensuring an adequate level of protection in the field of the safe transfer, handling and use of living modified organisms resulting from modern biotechnology that may have adverse effects on the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, taking also into account risks to human health, and specifically focusing on transboundary movements.” Article 1 (8) Cartagena protocol is a multilateral environmental agreement (MEA) regarding the environmental issues of the modified organisms. During the laboratory we had our safety rules based on the Cartegena protocol, thus preserving the safety of environment.

- Public

Our project wouldn’t threaten the safety of the public, since our device of gfp expression is intended for laboratory works, and also even when released in public, wouldn’t do much harm to the public.
