NCSSM iGEM Safety Report

The NCSSM iGEM team has had basic laboratory safety training by the NCSSM Chemistry department prior to the organization of the team. However, the following lab safety information was issued to each member of the NCSSM iGEM team and the standard iGEM safety release form was signed and returned on time.

1. Eye Protection: Safety goggles must be worn over the eyes at all time during lab procedures and live demonstrations.
2. Clothing: Suitable clothing is required. Clothing is a protection against spilled chemicals and flammable liquids. Shorts, and loose or fuzzy clothing are not acceptable dress. Shoes are required.
3. Food: Absolutely no food or drink (even drinking water) is allowed in the lab at any time. Hands should be washed before leaving the laboratory since many of the chemicals handled are more or less toxic. Furthermore, many of the chemicals on your body can ruin basic experiments or reactions.
4. Unauthorized Experiments: Unauthorized experiments are strictly prohibited. All experiments must be passed by team captains and team coach.
5. Clear Working Area: Before and after each use of the lab area, team members must clean up after themselves and return all equipment to an appropriate area.
6. Safety Equipment: Know the location of all safety equipment (fire exits, safety showers, eyewash fountains, fire extinguishers, and fire blankets).
7. Accidents: For chemicals in the eyes, flush immediately with large volumes of water, using the eyewash fountain.
8. Common Sense:It is expected that common sense and accepted laboratory technique will be practiced, and the following common sense laboratory procedures should be considered rules for laboratory safety.
   • Water insoluble materials (solids or liquids) must not be discarded in the sink. Dispose of all chemicals and biohazard materials in the appropriate way
   • All equipment must be turned off before you leave the laboratory.
   • Flammable material in an open vessel must never be heated using a flame.
   • Laboratory benches, hoods, and sinks must be kept clean. Spilled chemicals and broken glass must be cleaned up immediately.
   • No laboratory experiment should be undertaken without careful advance preparation.

  The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics is residential public high school for highly gifted 11th and 12th graders in the state of North Carolina. Students at NCSSM regularly take advantage of the schools research opportunities. NCSSM iGEM is the latest research opportunity to these students!
