Team Origins

In November of 2011, the iGEM_UANL team, came to our high school, CIDEB, and gave us a speech about synthetic biology in the auditorium. During their Speech, they talked about iGEM, so the principal of CIDEB liked the idea of forming a team in the high school. In December, we began to form lists of people interested in joining the team. Later, in January, iGEM UANL’s team members, with the teacher Jannet Salinas, Elsa Flores and Manuel Torres, offered us an introductory course with topics of synthetic biology and microbiology, as a training for future iGEM CIDEB team members. After this course the official team was formed based on the members that during the course showed abilities and interest, and, together, we began to create a project in which we are actually working. We came to the idea of forming a semi-quantifier circuit of molecules and we saw that this was a big project we decided to divide the team into little groups to cover each of the areas belonging to iGEM project.

For greater efficiency, the project was divided in different areas and we distributed team members in each of these ones. It is important to know that, even though each person of the team was in one or more groups, we also helped in other areas when needed. Our team was divided into these groups:

  1. Wet Lab: This group was in charge of performing the experiments in the laboratory to build the circuit. Lilia Estrada, Brenda Sedano, Ana Segura and Carolina Quintanilla were in the ones who were in charge to do all the experiments necessary to assure that this circuit will work well.
  2. Math Model: This group was responsible for performing the theoretical simulation of the operation, according to the protocols of each of the genes and pieces that make up the circuit. Rubén Navarro was in charge of this.
  3. Human Pratices: This area was in charge to go to junior highs and other schools to spread what is Synthetic Biology . Estefanía Oliva, Cecilia Gutierrez, Gisela Plata, Marcela Lee and Turley Macías, were the chosen ones to go from school to school to spread this knowledge to the students.
  4. Safety: This team was in charge of writing a manual with all the protocols that must be followed in the lab. Ricardo Serrato was the one who wrote this important manual which have information to how to prevent accidents in the laboratory.
  5. Image: This group designed different things, like the T-Shirt, logo, and the wiki of the team. Sarai Garza and Carolina Quintanilla were the ones who, with creativity, gave
  6. Redaction: Wrote and edited the information contained in the wiki. Cynthia Castillo was the one in charge of editing all the information that the other team members wrote.
