We would like to start an iGEM team at our school.  iGEM stands for the international genetically engineered machine.  This competition has been around since 2004 for colleges and universities.  High school students have been able to compete in the collegiate competition since 2004.  In 2010, iGEM started the high school division, iGEM HS is designed to allow high school the ability to participate in the competition on their schedule.  This competition is in synthetic biology.  Synthetic biology is the ability to engineer genetic sequences to cause a cell to perform a task or process that is desired.  High school students engineer a cellular machine to perform a task that their team has chosen to solve.  Your students will document their project on a team wiki.  This wiki will be managed by iGEM and open to the public, so any pictures of information will be viewed by the public.

The competition is judged during the jamboree.  The jamboree is held the last week of June in Indiana.  During the jamboree teams will present their projects in poster and 20 minute presentation.  These projects will be judged by leading individuals in the field of synthetic biology, biotechnology, and engineering industry.  Students will also be able to interact with students from around the world and industry leaders.

We would like your permission to allow these students to participate in iGEM HS.  By signing this you are providing permission for your school to participate in synthetic biology.  If you have any questions please contact Rebecca Schini, Rebecca@igem.org at  iGEM Headquarters.
