Safety is a very important consideration in working in synthetic biology for the DNA Architects of South Bend Mishawaka. When we work in our laboratory, ever session starts and stops with hand washing. We also wear personal protective gear at all times: lab coat, safety glasses, and nitrile gloves. The work with our antibiotic resistant microbes is done in a BSL-2 BioSafety Cabinet. We sanitize our work areas with 70% ethanol which we used to spray down our media bottles and plates. Used plastic wear and cultures are disposed of in the SteriCycle medical waste disposal service. The lab surfaces are monitored by periodic wipe tests to detect the presence of antibiotic resistant bacteria.
